The Labyrinth at Community Health Partners Ireland Cancer Center.
Elyria, Ohio, U.S.A.
Symbolic of a journey, this labyrinth is a full size
(42.3’diameter) 11-circuit Chartres pattern labyrinth painted
on colored concrete. The labyrinth is surrounded by an 8’ wide
exposed aggregate perimeter enabling people to access all sides
of the labyrinth. Aligned with each quadrant and within the
labyrinth perimeter, the four elements are symbolized: earth,
air, water and fire. The entry to the labyrinth is oriented towards
the access from the main waiting area of the Ireland Cancer
Center, inviting people to come and walk.
Open walks are regularly held for all members of the
community, people with cancer, their families and friends.
The
adjacent Phoenix Center does work with grieving children who
have lost loved ones to cancer. The labyrinth is also used with
children’s programs. Staff have found this labyrinth to be a
peaceful refreshment and place to revitalize during their work
day.
Dick Hyde, Executive Director of the Community Health
Partners Foundation made this garden and the support services
wing possible with his vision and commitment to creating
funding for this progressive cancer care facility.
